From Backpacker to Messenger Bag Rocker (I couldn't think of anything else to name it) featuring ZMO

I think I go over this every year. One would think that a 35 year old B-boy/capoeirista would have given up his backpack a long time ago. While I spend a good amount of time driving, I still rock one. Then again, I have been rocking messenger bags for the last 10 years. I had to stay ahead of the curve right?

I find that having babies requires that you carry a knapsack or messenger bag. One needs to carry diapers, extra clothes, baby wipes, books, pens, change, toys, snacks, bottled water, coupons, crayons, and coloring books. All these things come in handy even when you are not rolling with the youngbloods.

Capoeiristas and B-boys always carry extra knick knacks. I guess being a hip hop head makes one practical. Plus it just looks so damn sporty. I feel like Batman with his utility belt. Pulling things out according to my need.

Need to tag on a wall? BOOM! Got my sharpie. Need to take notes? BOOM! Got my composition book. The babies are bored ? BOOM! Pull out the crayons and the coloring book. Waiting on line? BOOM! Pull out the latest book. Feeling a little hungry? BOOM! Pull out the zip loc bag filled with cashews. Need to hear something new? BOOM! Pull out a nice Mix Cd.

It comes in mad handy..
Speaking of the back packer days:

Rappers vs. eMCees 99'
production by Joe City
featuring Yohon DI maginative
2000

One reason why I stay away from mainstream hip hop music is the fact that heads have really left out their writing and straight ill rhymes. I want my songs to be joints that I can rewind each verse to really feel what the MC is saying. Only on independent and underground joints can one catch MCs trading verses back and forth. I can dance to the older stuff.

On Rappers vs. Emcees, ZMO and Yohon Di Imaginative pass the mic back and forth. I appreciate the fact that both heads shout out several artists and their songs throughout the song. It really catches the early 90's era of dope groups filled with ill MCs. With an ill head nodding track by Joe City, both MCs just bring it. What more can a hip hop head ask for? Dope beats, dope rhymes, a simple equation.

Every verse that I write?
Strictly De La Soul!

Gotta love it. Backpackers for ever...

someone needs to write a backpacker manifesto...
hmmm

I feel ya on the bag thing- maybe it's a city thing? You have to be prepared for whatever Gotham is gonna throw your way on any given day- train stuck in between stations, funny homeless dude dancing a jig in Union Square, that funny sign outside the Third Ave Pick-A-Bagel that says "Toss Your Own Salad"- how could I capture all these moments of my life without a record-keeping arsenal in my messenger bag?
