The Year of the Gun
by ZMO
2005, Production by Pete Twist

I remember a distinct time in my life where if you knew someone who had a knife, that person would be considered crazy. Eventually, we all ended up carrying butterfly knives, box cutters, and razors in our daily travels in NYC. It was part of the uniform. It could also save your life. I even recall a time when .38 specials and 380 revolvers were the bisquits of choice. Then came crack cocaine and the year of the gun. Everyone and their mother had access to automatic weapons. There were 14 year old kids sporting AK 47's. Even my righteous tail had the opportunity to bus a couple into the air on the rooftop of my project after a night of weed and forty ounces of Old Gold.

ZMO emphasizes this statement on this single. Now ZMO does not do the usual gangsta pose. If anything, he is a product of his environment. His threats to reach for the gat does not come natural to him. Yet he sees that as an option. He admits that he is a man not a gun crazy maniac. The track itself is eerie and reminds one of Nightmare on Elm Street.

ZMO however does not bring nothing new to all the gun talk. He doesn't question the ignorance that comes with gun violence. The song instead becomes a tribute to gun busting instead of a cautionary lesson. Oftentimes, several MCs get caught up in the moment. This is one of those times that ZMO does get caught up.

While we all can admit that it is the Year of the Gun, it doesn't always have to go down like that.
