Once again, I must big up my wife. She allows me to venture out on my wild forays into the concrete jungle. She is one of the reasons I can bring you tales of Jedi lore. She is one of the reasons why alot of people live to see another day (so you guys have to thank her as well). So once again love, thank you for letting me be me. For letting me be that ghetto superhuman who fights crime everyday.
back to the roda in Petersburg:
Pele was the first to arrive at my house on Sunday morning. He was followed by Pharoan and finally Deputado. Alot of people backed out at the last minute. We left Norfolk at around 10:55am , 25 minutes behind schedule. I brought some extra tapes with me (my van only plays tapes... old school from the hill, ya'll). BUt i did not need them. We talked most of the way. That is one reason I enjoy the company I keep. All we do is build. That's great. And our topics range from cartoons to history to politics and pretty much the entire alphabet when it comes to topics.
We had Deputado laughing about our last encounter in Petersburg. Pele got on us for not stopping the roda. I tried not to laugh but i could not help it. What is dope is the camarderie amongst the warriors. We are warriors. I do not say soldier because we take orders from no one but are loyal to one another. Traveling to other rodas can bring alot of unpredicatiblity to a scene. You don't know if a spiteful individual may lurk in the outskirts of one. You don't know if you might run into someone you don't like. You may run into someone who brings negative energy. All kinds of things can happen. People can get hurt. We go in though feeling confident. We are many, we are strong, and we are confident. We are also very receptive and quick thinking. So i could not be around a better bunch of merry warriors. Before we attend any event, we make sure that if one of us provokes someone or defend ourselves to the , we pledge that we will second those motions (like any self respecting bunch of merry warriors would).
We arrived at Dabtara's house around 12:45pm. We reacquaint ourselves with his squad. We are already getting attached to this group of merry warriors. So we joked about our last visit while we waited for a few more heads to come through. SOme people came from Philly and Baltimore to check us out. Matter of fact, Dabtara and his crew made this a big production. They had flyers and everything. Since it was getting cooler outside, he decided to set us up at a local community center.
We arrived there at around 1:30pm. From there it was on. We set up our berimbau's and changed our clothes. THen we started to stretch. THat was when the heads from Grupo Preto Velhos came. We had big kool aid smiles on our face. It was about 12 capoeiristas total. It was on. THere were so many instruments. And there were folks waiting on us! we had an audience. We brought out a bench for the berimbau players to play on. THen the roda began.
The singing was awesome. We sounded like professionals. Even though the drums sort of drowned out the berimbau's it was still a wicked sound. We kept the energy in the roda. We played angola for like an hour and a half. THen we got into regional. There were some tight games. MY man Malik (a brother I have not seen in years) came through. HE played some dope games with us. The highlight of the day had to be Pharoan and Malik's long game. Here were two other brothers going at it and they shamed us all. I almost got kicked in the face by Malik, lucky for me, my hands were up. BUt on video it looks wild.
I was like a baby in candy store. I was as happy as a faggot with a bag of dilznilz's. I cheesed the whole time. I spent much more time playing instruments more than anything else. I sang to my heart's content. I felt the energy of the entire roda passing through my body. It felt real good. I felt like a million bucks.
After it was over, we headed to Dabtara's spot and ate. Man, it was good. Then we watched the video of that day's roda and the previous. It was dope. suddenly i got a call from my wife. It was time to go. We joked on the way back and were all excited.
I love you guys, man.
thanks again to all who attended.
